Starting in 1969, the 1954 issue began to be phased out. new "multi-coloured notes appeared. The traditional "will pay the bearer on demand" was replaced with "this note is legal tender". In 1986, the notes were again given a 'facelift', with a new "bird" series replacing the multi-coloured issues. This was in conjunction with the replacement of the $1 bill with a coin.
