Originally a 20-cent piece was chosen to bridge the gap between the decimal and British currency systems. After Confederation, the government withdrew the 20c pieces and recoined them as 25-cent pieces, or "quarter dollar". It followed the same composition changes as the dime, beginning it's life as Sterling silver and over time being reduced to a copper-nickel alloy.
